E226 Calcium Sulfite

This sulfite is the calcium salt of sulfurous acid. Chemical formula is: CaSO3.

This preservative is not permitted in Australia, but it is still used everywhere else.

Instead the E225 is not permitted in US/Canada or in Europe, but is still approved to use in Australia and New Zealand. I don’t have any specific data from Asia or Africa nor South America about the sulfites. Most of the information available about sulfites is from US/Canada, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. But sulfites are used everywhere in the world. China being the number one producer/manufacturer in the world. From my experience sulfites are labeled in Japan, not always though, and many products sold in Singapore, manufacturered locally or somewhere else in Asia does contain the ‘warning’ contain sulfites, specially in different straches and dried fruits, both products where the levels of sulfites are almost always higher than 10 ppm.

Food uses of calcium sulfite:

  • Canned fruits
  • Canned vegetables
  • Fruit juices
  • Cider
  • Wine

Non food uses of calcium sulfite:

  • Disinfectant in brewing vats
  • In water filtration systems like Kangen Water Ionizer.
